The park contains 26 named glaciers, 382 lakes and 470 rivers and streams. It is home to 160 birds species, 63 mammals including gray wolf, grizzly bear, Canada lynx and Chinook salmon, as well as numerous reptiles, amphibians and fish.

History
The Park was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1997 as a showcase for "NPS Rustic" style architecture of the 1920's and 1930's.

Indian Henry's Hunting Ground

Distance :13 miles.

Location : Mt.Rainier National Park (Washington)

This forest hike travels from Kautz Creek trailhead to Mirror Lake and return. It is the oldest known route to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground. The path ascends gently for a mile, to a log-and-cable crossing over gray Kautz Creek. It leaves the creek here and rises to beautiful old-growth cedar, hemlock and Douglas Fir forest.

The trail comes to a series of steep stairs that lead to the first sighting of Mount Rainier, since the start of the hike. Continue on through meadows of wild flowers, you will reach Indian Henry's Hunting Ground. Here you will have a fine view of the grandeur and beauty of Mount Rainier.

From here it is a 1.8 mile return trip to the picturesque Mirror Lakes. If you wish to camp the night, continue on a mile south, on the Wonderland Trail, and camp at Devils Dream. You will need a backcountry permit.
