Blue Mountains National Park

This National Park is one of the most visited parks in the country. The park is so large, that once you are away from the main tourist areas, you could almost be on your own. The Blue Mountains are part of the Great Dividing Range, which runs down nearly the full length of Australia. Rock climbing and canyoning are popular, some of the climbs are regarded among the best in the country. For the overnight hiker, the park provides dozens of options. Bush camping is permitted anywhere in the park away from the tracks and roads. The exception being the Grose Valley, where it is restricted.

The Six Foot Track

Distance : 42 kms

Location : 180kms west of Sydney (Capital of New South Wales)

This trail starts at the Explorers Tree on the Great Western Highway at Katoomba. The Explorers Tree was marked by Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth on the first crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813. It's a bit worse for wear, but still there. The trail travels through the Megalong Valley, over the Mini Mini Range, up the Black Range and down the Binoomea Ridge to Jenolan Caves. The track itself was built in 1884 as a six-foot wide horse riding track from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. It halved the travelling time to the caves. Today it is a perfect trail for novice hikers, who wish to overnight.
