Uluru National Park (Kata Tjuta)
Uluru (Ayers Rock) is the most famous landmark in Australia. It is one of the largest monoliths in the world. The rock is a sacred site to the local Aboriginal people. The sandstone of the rock glows red at sunset, its a sight once seen, never forgotton. The Aboriginal people discourage people from climbing the actual rock, but many walk around Ulura. Ulura is an Aboriginal word, meaning 'great pebble'. Circumference Circuit Distance : 8kms Location : 450kms South/west of Alice Springs The starting point for this hike is the main car park at Ulura National Park. It entails the walk around the whole rock, you can also take a small side track to Maggie Springs. Camping and accommodation is available at Yulara, but there is no camping in the National Park. The base of Uluru is awe inspiring and it is quite interesting exploring the many caves and overhangs. Signs explain the significance of the rock art.
