Thorsborne Trail (Hinchinbrook Island)
Distance : 32 kms Location : East Coast, about half way between Townsville and Cairns. The Island is reached by ferry from the town of Cardwell. Most hikers start at Ramsay Bay and walk south to George Point. Allow at least three nights to traverse the trail, but longer is recomended. The best time is in winter (April to September). Coloured markers make navigation along the trail easy. The climate is tropical in nature, with a rainfall as high as 500mm in January-March, but in July-September only an average of 30mm and perhaps five days of rain. It's necessary to book ahead, as the number of hikers is restricted. Only 40 are allowed on the trail, at one time. The largest group size is six. Permits are needed for camping. Small fuel stoves are necessary, as no fires are allowed on the Island. A good insect repellent is essential, as is sunblock. Beware of the crocodiles in mangrove estuaries, on the western side of the island. Also the ocean may contain venomous marine stingers during the warmer months.
