Forrest-Lakes Circuit (Fraser Island)
Distance : 38km, plus 16km Beach Walk. Location : 200kms north of Brisbane. The Island is reached by Barge from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. Frazer Island is the largest sand island in the world. It is famous for its pure freshwater lakes and surf beaches, as well as dense rainforests. The island is listed as a World Heritage Area, being of universal significance for its large, intact coastal dune system and unique environments. The island has more than 40 dune lakes, over half the world's known total. Lake Boomanjin is the world's largest perched lake. The Boomerang Lakes are the world's highest perched lakes at 130m above sea level. Lake McKenzie is the most well known lake on the island, and is home to three species of freshwater turtles. Park Ranges advise against feeding turtles or fish, as any increase in food for one species alters the natural balance of life in the lake community. The island is home to 24 species of mammals, including dingos, and 240 species of birds. The dingos are wild dogs introduced to Australia from Asia some 40,000 years ago. The Frazer Island dingos, are the most pure bred in Australia, as they have rarely interbred with domestic dogs. Care must be taken with the dingos, as they are natural hunters and have been known to attack and kill humans. The Forest-Lakes Circuit starts at Dilli Village and links all the most popular lakes on the southern half of the island. The beginning and end of the walk are separated by 16km of beach. To avoid walking along the beach, organise a drop off, or set up a car shuffle. Hikers can always hitch a lift along the beach, with the many 4WD travelling the beach. The trail is divided into six sections that can be walked individually if desired. 1. Dilli Village to Lake Boomanjin. 2. Lake Boomanjin to Lake Benaroon (Bush Camp) 3. Lake Benaroon to Central Station 4. Central Station to Lake McKenzie. 5. Lake McKenzie to Lake Wabby 6. Lake Wabby to Dilli Village. A 4WD is essential for travelling on Frazer Island.
