Lawn Hill National Park
Lawn Hill is in the Gulf Country of Queensland. The actual gorge is an unexpected tropical oasis. It is fed by springs in the limestone hills on the border of the Northern Territory. The gorge has water all year round. The Riversleigh sections of the park are World Heritage-listed because of their internationally important mammal fossils. These fossils date back 25 million years, and they show the existence of egg-laying mammals, that were the forerunners of the present day Australian animals. The gorge is home to a hugh array of mammals, birds and aquatic life. April to September are the only time to visit. Although the days can be 30*, the nights can be freezing. Always take a warm sleeping bag. A 4-W drive is recommended. The National Park Services have built 20km of marked bushwalking tracks, that show the more spectacular sights. Upper Gorge Circuit Distance : 7 kms Location : The National Park is 400kms north-west of Mt.Isa. The walk starts at the Lawn Hill camping area, and loops through the upper gorge. There are options for short trails to various lookouts. The track takes you to the top of the cliffs. The gorge is home to an amazing variety of wildlife. There is a wonderful swimming hole on the Indarri, it is usually safe to swim, as long as the river isn't in flood. FURTHER INFORMATION Lawn Hill National Park, PMB 12, Mt Isa, Queensland. 4825 |
