Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park
One of the most famous National Parks in Australia. This is a world heritage park and has a impressive section of Tasmania's mountain scenery. The vegetation consists of antarctic pines, huon pines, pencil pines and King Billy pines. The park contains the state's highest mountain, Mt Ossa (1614m) and the famous 80km long overland track. The wildlife includes pademelons potoroos, possums Bennetts wallaby and tiger cats. The Overland Track Distance : 80Km Location : Cradle Mountain The starting point for the walk, is the Dove Lake car park and the destination is Lake St.Clair. Several huts provide good shelter, but they are often crowded in holiday season. This hike is not a circuit, and you will need to arrange transport at both ends. There is a small entrance fee. Tasmania has harsh weather conditions, as it is situated so far south. It can even snow in summer. Casual hikers often attempt this hike under prepared. You will need at the very least a Gore-Tex jacket and over trousers. A good quality waterproof tent and ground- sheet, a water-proof sleeping bag liner is handy and fuel stove is necessary, as no campfires are allowed. FURTHER INFORMATION Cradle Mountain Park Office |
