Maria Island National Park
Maria Island was declared and National Park in 1972. In the late 1960's the endangered Cape Barron geese were released here. At the last count , they had increased to many thousand. The waters surrounding the island are a marine park. The island convict ruins have been restored, and the island is now a highlight of the tourist industry. Maria Island Circuit Distance : 60kms Location : East Coast of Tasmania The hike around this beautiful island, starts at Darlington. A ferry from the mainland provides the transport to the island. The hike will include all the attractions of this special place, Painted Cliffs, Hopground Beach, Frenchs Farm, Encampment Cove, Robeys Creek and Mt. Maria. Camping permits are necessary, available from the ranger. This is not only unique tranquil island hike, but the island is full of historical buildings. The Rangers will give tours in peak season.
