The Alpine National Park is the largest park in Victoria. The Wonnangatta region includes a large southern section of the Alpine National Park. The Wonnangatta Valley is an area of gorges, rough tracks and camp sites. A 4-W drive is essential and many of the roads are closed in winter. Mt Bogong is the highest peak in Victoria. The landscape is a carpet of flowers in summer and covered with snow in winter.
Mt Hotham is the home of a rare pygmy possum, that was thought to be extinct for thousands of years. In 1966 a live specimen of the Mountain Pygmy Possum was found in a pile of ski gear in a mountain hut. It lives under the snow in winter and is the world's only alpine marsupial.
