Kimberley
The kimberley region is in the north of Western Australia. It is an immense plateau carved by the river system. It includes at least 8 major National Parks, and is considered complete wilderness. It is inaccessible in many areas. 4w-drives are recommended, and can be hired at all the main centres. As with all remote travelling it is necessary to carry extra supplies. It is really only possible to travel in the dry season (April to October). In the wet, the humid conditions make life unpleasant and the floodwaters can cut you off for months at a time. There is always the danger of cyclones in the wet season. Piccaninny Gorge Walk Distance : 34km Location : Purnululu (Bungle Bungle) National Park (The Kimberley) The starting point for this walk is at Piccaninny Creek car park in Purnululu National Park. This walk is considered one of the best in Western Australia, with Cathedral Gorge, sandstone beehive- shaped domes and livistona palms. There is no drinkable water, so 6 ltrs per person, per day, must be carried. The natural hazards in this region, include saltwater crocodiles, so keep clear of the waters edge. Snakes are active in warm weather so you must wear solid boots and long pants in the bush. FURTHER INFORMATION Kimberley Regional Office PO Box 942, Kununurra. Western Australia. |
