The Pilbara
The Pilbara region is located on the Tropic of Capricorn in Western Australia. The Karijini National Park is the second largest in Western Australia and is famous for its sheer-sided chasms and waterfalls, Hundred-metre cliffs droping into cool gorges. The iron rich bedrock give the cliffs their blood red colour. The wildlife includes goannas and snakes, as well as the rare rock wallabies and euros. 4W drives are recomended. Bushwalking (hiking) is the main reason people visit Karijini and it has twenty or more marked trails, that provide access to gorge lookouts. Karijini Gorges Walk Distance : 3km Location : Pilbara region of Western Australia. The town of Mt Tom Price is 80km west or Port Hedland 300km north-east. A good first stop for hikers is Oxer Lookout It is the junction of four gorges. Then head down the Weano Gorge to Handrail Pool, then onto the beautiful Kermits Pool. Camping is permitted at several places in the park adjacent to the gorges. Weano camping area, Joffre camping area and Fortescue camping area. An inflatable air bed is handy to float on the many pools, after a long day walking, but be aware that the pools can be extremely cold, take time to adjust to the water temperature.
